Centre pledges to look into Manipur fake encounter case
Manipur Police head constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh confessed to killing an unarmed People's Liberation Army member on orders from superiors.
The central government on Wednesday said it will look into the confession of a Manipur police officer that he had killed an unarmed suspected insurgent in 2009. "I will get the information and then I can comment. We will look into it," Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh told Outlook.
Manipur Police head constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh told CNN-IBN that he had killed Sanjit Meitei, an unarmed People's Liberation Army militant, on orders from senior officers in 2009. He added that the chief minister of the state at the time, Ibobi Singh of the Congress, was also kept in the loop.
In July 2009, nine commandos of the Manipur Police were accused of killing Meitei, an alleged terrorist who had surrendered but was shot dead on a busy road in Imphal. The killing of the unarmed youth had led to protests in the state.
