A committee set up by the Human Resource Development Ministry has recommended that textbooks should be made available in Sanskrit. The ministry established the 13-member expert committee as part of its efforts to promote Sanskrit as the medium of instruction in India and revive interest in the language, Hindustan Times reported.

The panel was headed by former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami, who is the chancellor of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Students from Vedic and Sanskrit pathshalas find it difficult to appear for Class 10 and 12 exams through open schools, as they are more comfortable in Sanskrit, Gopalaswami said. He added that the students suggested making textbooks available in Sanskrit for mathematics and science.

Other recommendations by the panel include giving students the choice to learn Sanskrit as per the three-language formula enforced in several schools, publishing Sanskrit manuals on subjects such as Ayurveda online, and making digitised Sanskrit manuscripts available in electronic and print form.
