Anti-refugee premier set to win in Slovakian election
Robert Fico, who is likely to be re-elected, had earlier said he will never bring ‘even a single Muslim’ to the country.
Slovaks are likely to elect anti-refugee Prime Minister Robert Fico, of the Smer party, a third time. The left-wing nationalist’s staunch views against refugees and his anti-immigration views are similar to neighbouring countries’ Hungary and Poland. Slovakia is set to take over the European Union’s rotating presidency this July, and will have more power during discussions regarding the refugee crisis.
AFP reported that Fico has said jihadists disguised as refugees can easily infiltrate the country, and that he has insisted on “monitoring every Muslim” that enters Slovakia. He also reportedly said, “We’ll never bring even a single Muslim to Slovakia, we won’t create any Muslim communities here because they pose a serious security risk,” at a rally in Bratislava ahead of the election.
Fico has also promised to help Bulgaria and Macedonia seal its borders to Greece if Athens does not manage the number of refugees entering the EU by mid-March. Macedonia recently closed off its border to Greece at Idomeni, and left thousands of refugees stranded.
