Economic Times on Tuesday reported that government sources said the intelligence provided about possible terror attacks in Gujarat could have referred to Gujrat, a village in Punjab. Intelligence agencies had picked up on chatter about a terrorist infiltration on Friday, after which they sounded a high alert in Gujarat and Delhi. However, security agencies found no leads during their searches. Gujrat is a small village near Pathankot, where an Indian air force base was attacked by terrorists in early January.

On Friday, Central intelligence agencies had said 10 suspected terrorists had entered the country and could carry out terror attacks similar to the 26/11 strike in Mumbai in 2008. The information was also corroborated by Pakistan National Security Advisor General Naseer Khan Janjhua.

With the festival of Mahashivratri being celebrated on Monday, the threat in public areas was even greater over the weekend. A senior official said they suspected a popular Shiv temple in Gujarat to be a target. A National Security Guard team was deployed to Gujarat after the alert, and security teams were sent to the temple as well. But a senior Gujarat police official told Economic Times that the searches had produced no evidence of terrorists crossing over the border.
