Protests continue at NIT Srinagar, HRD ministry says exams can be taken later
Students are now demanding that the institute be shifted out of Kashmir, in addition to action against the state police.
Students at the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, continued to protest on Thursday, after police lathi-charged protestors there on Tuesday. Earlier in the week, a group of outstation students demanded to be sent home after clashes broke out, following India's defeat to West Indies in the World Twenty20 semifinals.
The Human Resource Development Ministry has said that students will be given the option to take their examinations – scheduled for next week – later in the light of the situation on campus. The ministry had also sent a three-member investigative team to look into the issue on Wednesday.
Several organisations called for a bandh in Jammu on Thursday because of police action against students. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also criticised the Centre and the People’s Democratic Party government in the state for the incident. NIT students are now demanding that the institute be shifted out of Kashmir, in addition to action against the state police.
