The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a fresh plea seeking an FIR against Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati in a disproportionate assets case, ANI reported. The petitioner, Kamlesh Verma, reportedly sought to reopen a case against her based on evidence regarding embezzlement in the Taj Corridor case. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Central Bureau of Investigation, said the agency had “no fresh material” for registering the FIR. Rohatgi also told the court that the Income Tax department had given a clean chit to Mayawati after investigating the case.

The petitioner said an FIR filed by the CBI in 2012 against the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister was quashed based on a technicality, and that the court had never gone into the evidence the agency had found against the politician in the case. The apex court had then dismissed the case against Mayawati because it said the CBI went ahead without fully understanding its orders regarding the case. However, the court said it had not negated the CBI’s authority to proceed against her in any other cases.

The Taj Corridor case concerns the embezzlement of money that was to be used in a project intended to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal. The CBI had done an extensive investigation in the case, which was filed in 2002. The project is now defunct.
