The Chinese government on Monday called the motives of Dalai Lama nefarious and warned its people after the Tibetan spiritual leader met musician Lady Gaga at a conference, reported AP. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that the purpose of the Dalai Lama's travels is to “promote his proposal for Tibetan independence.” "We hope that people from the international community can be fully aware of his true colours and nature," said Lei.

On Sunday, before delivering the keynote address at the US Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis, the Dalai Lama met the American singer. The Dalai Lama, Lady Gaga and billionaire businessman Philip Anschutz addressed around 200 American mayors about the importance of kindness in today’s world.

This is not the first time the Tibetan spiritual leader’s international meetings have recently been criticised by China. The Dalai Lama's meeting with United States President Barack Obama on June 15 also drew flak from Beijing.

China considers the Dalai Lama a political figure who supports for Tibetan independence from China. The latter, however, has always maintained that he only wants a higher degree of autonomy under the Chinese rule.
