NGT sets Rs 5,000 as fine for using pressure horns or removing silencers from vehicles in Delhi
The green tribunal asked the city's traffic police to take action against those found causing 'undue and intolerable' sound resulting in noise pollution.
Anybody found using pressure horns or removing silencers from their vehicles in Delhi will be fined Rs 5,000, the National Green Tribunal has ruled. The panel directed Delhi traffic police to take action against those found causing "undue and intolerable" sound resulting in noise pollution, reported PTI.
"We hereby direct that in addition to other actions of challans and penalty under the Motor Vehicles Act, offenders causing noise pollution would be liable to pay an environment compensation of Rs 5,000 per violation on the basis of 'Polluter Pays' principle," said the bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar. The compensation will be deposited in a separate account.
The tribunal said traffic police can approach NGT for issuance of notice against a defaulter. An NGT bench had earlier imposed a ban on the use of pressure horns in the capital, citing the noise pollution it creates. It had also set up a committee to identify silence zones in the city to help control the "menace".
