Curfew brought back in parts of Kashmir
Separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested while trying to take out a march to pay tribute to those killed in recent clashes.
Authorities reimposed a curfew in parts of Kashmir on Wednesday, ahead of a march by separatist leaders to Kulgam district. Separatist groups called for a three-day strike till July 29 to pay tribute to those recently killed in clashes with security forces. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested while trying to take out a march, TimesNow reported.
Among the areas where restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed include five areas of Srinagar, PTI reported. "Curfew has been reimposed in entire Kulgam district and Anantnag town as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order," said a police officer, adding that areas under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal and Nowhatta Maisuma and Kralkhud police stations were out of bounds for more than four people at a time.
Normal life remained paralysed for the 19th consecutive day in Kashmir. Vehicles stayed off the roads while schools and colleges remained shut. Postpaid mobile connections were reported;y restored late on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, one person died in a road accident and 14 others were injured during clashes on Tuesday after curfew was temporarily lifted from all parts of Kashmir, except Anantnag town. Around 47 people have died in violence that erupted following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
