Cricket: Roston Chase's fighting century helps West Indies escape with a draw against India
After struggling at 48/4 facing a deficit of 256, West Indies played out the entire day to deny India victory.
An unbeaten 137 from West Indies' Roston Chase helped his team bat out the last day of the second Test against India. The game ended in a draw, a result that looked impossible a day ago when the hosts had been tottering at 48/4.
The 24-year-old, who had also taken a five-wicket haul in India's first innings, was measured and played counter-attacking cricket, ably supported first by Jermaine Blackwood, then Shane Dowrich and finally Jason Holder.
Blackwood took the attack to India, hitting 63 off only 54 balls, but Ravichandran Ashwin had his number, getting him to bat-pad to Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg. Wicket-keeper Dowrich proved more than an able replacement, ensuring West Indies remained untroubled.
Chase reached his century in the 73rd over, but Dowrich was unlucky to be given out leg-before-wicket after getting an inside edge onto one that went on to his pads. However, captain Holder and Chase ensured that India were shut out of the match, getting to the magic figure of 304 which meant that India would have to bat again.
