JNU rape case: Accused scholar surrenders to Delhi Police, sent to judicial custody for 14 days
The former All India Students’ Association president at the university was on the run since the survivor lodged a complaint against him.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University scholar accused of raping a fellow student on campus surrendered to the police on Wednesday night, PTI reported. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Nupur Prasad said, “Anmol Ratan has surrendered at Vasant Kunj (north) police station." He was sent to judicial custody for 14 days after he was produced before a court on the same day.
The former All India Students’ Association president at JNU, Ratan has been on the run after the woman lodged her complaint. On Tuesday, his lawyer moved an anticipatory bail plea before a sessions court in Delhi. The court said the matter will be heard on August 27.
Earlier on Wednesday, the rape survivor had recorded her statement before Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria when she reiterated what she had said to the police, reported The Indian Express. In her complaint, the woman said Ratan had contacted her after she had posted a message on her Facebook profile in June asking whether anyone had a copy of the movie Sairat. He picked her up from her hostel on August 20 to give her the CD of the film and took her to Brahmaputra Hostel where he allegedly offered her a spiked drink and then raped her.
Ratan was expelled from the students' association, which later issued a statement condemning the incident.
