Cauvery dispute: Statewide bandh in Tamil Nadu tomorrow, Opposition parties declare support
The Supreme Court, while hearing a plea filed against the protests in Karnataka, said both states must ensure that 'no agitation and damage take place'.
A statewide bandh will be observed in Tamil Nadu on Friday, September 15. A number of farmers's groups and trade organisations called for the shutdown to mark their protest against the violence aimed at Tamilians in Karnataka over the Cauvery water dispute. They have also called for a long-term solution to the row, Mint reported.
While most Opposition parties in the state, such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League have extended support for the dawn-to-dusk strike, the Supreme Court said both states were obliged to ensure that "no agitation and damage take place". The court was hearing a plea filed against the violence in Karnataka and adjourned it to September 20, ANI reported.
DMK president M Karnunanidhi directed his party members to extend complete backing for the bandh. However, the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has not expressed support for the shutdown.
Members of the Vijayakanth-led Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam will hold a hunger strike at the party Chennai headquarters on Friday. IUML chief Khader Mohideen said, "We condemn the continuing violence in Karnataka against Tamils. IUML will participate in the bandh to protest against it."
