Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, The Hindu reported.

The 60-year-old Indian Police Service officer was taken to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12.48 pm.

Preliminary reports have suggested that Dhankar likely died by suicide, but the authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of death.

“We don’t know what the cause of death was at this point,” The Indian Express quoted Dr Pradip Bhowmik, head of the department of general medicine, as saying. “We are sending the body for post-mortem examination.”

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation, The Hindu reported.

According to the hospital, Dhankar was brought in around noon, where doctors attempted resuscitation before declaring him dead, The Indian Express reported.

Bhowmik said Dhankar had no vital signs when he was brought in. Doctors attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not revive him, he added.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary JK Sinha and other senior officials visited the hospital, The Hindu reported.

Dhankar had taken charge as Tripura’s police chief in May 2025. During his career, he held several senior positions in the Tripura Police and also served on deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Border Security Force.

He had also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-’04.
