The 22-year-old allegedly touched a live wire and electrocuted himself in his cell in Puzhal prison.
The 22-year-old man accused of hacking to death Infosys employee S Swathi at a railway station in Chennai allegedly committed suicide in Puzhal jail on Sunday. Ramkumar was alone in his cell when he electrocuted himself by touching a live wire, and prison officials said he died on the spot, The New Indian Express reported. His body has been moved to the mortuary of Royapettah General Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Before his arrest in July, he had slit his throat when the Chennai Police had surrounded him. Doctors who had treated him had said the injury was minor.
The engineering graduate from Tirunelveli was Swathi’s neighbour in Chennai's Choolaimedu area, the police had said, adding that Ramkumar was infatuated with Swathi. According to Police Commissioner TK Rajendran, he likely committed the murder when he realised his feelings were not reciprocated by Swathi, who he hacked to death on June 24 at Nungambakkam railway station.
