Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday died after 70 years on the throne at the age of 88, BBC reported. Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, had been in poor health and had only made a few public appearances in recent years, according to the report. The Royal Palace said the king had died “in a peaceful state”, according to AP.

The palace on Sunday had said the king’s condition was “not stable”, after which well-wishers had flocked to the hospital to pray for him. The heir-apparent to the throne is 63-year-old Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. Adulyaadej’s death comes as the country continues to be ruled by its military, which came to power in a coup in 2014.
