Pro-Kabaddi player arrested two days after wife committed suicide alleging dowry harassment
Rohit Chillar's wife had left a note and audio message in which she said her husband had asked her to leave him 'for his happiness'.
National-level kabaddi player Rohit Chillar was arrested by the Delhi Police on Friday in connection with his wife's suicide, ANI reported. His father had surrendered to the police earlier in the day. Lalita Kumar was found hanging at her parents' house in the Capital on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old woman had left a suicide note in which she accused Chillar and his family of torturing her for dowry. She had also recorded a two-hour-long audio message for her husband and a shorter one for her family. A senior police officer said, "Lalita said in the note that she was asked by her husband last weekend to leave him for his happiness, so she took this step."
The couple met when Kumar was in college and got married in March 2016. Chillar joined the Indian Navy in 2009, and was posted in Mumbai. Police said Kumar, in her note, also alleged that she was forced to live alone because her husband was frequently out of town.
The local administration had also ordered a sub-divisional magistrate-level inquiry into the incident. Besides the national team, Rohit Kumar plays for the Bengaluru Bulls in the Pro-Kabaddi League.
