Government has people's support on demonetisation, says Narendra Modi
The PM asked BJP legislators to reach out to people and explain how his decision to denotify Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will help the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked Bharatiya Janata Party legislators to reach out to people and explain how his decision to denotify Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will help the country and flush out black money. “Janshakti [people’s support] is with the government on demonetisation,” said Modi as he addressed the BJP parliamentary party meet. The party’s lawmakers adopted a resolution that praised the people for their support to the demonetisation move.
Modi also said that Opposition parties have behaved undemocratically and stalled Parliament, preventing it from debating reforms. “What some Opposition parties are doing is undemocratic and the issue should be debated in Parliament,” he added. The BJP had hoped to have several Bills including those connected with the Goods and Service Tax passed during the month-long Winter Session of Parliament.
Meanwhile in Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad raised questions on the government’s demonetisation move. “[The] government took this decision without planning, who is responsible for so many deaths?” Other parties demanded Modi’s apology for causing inconvenience to the people. Union Minister Ananth Kumar told the House that citizens supported Modi’s move and it was proved when he topped TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year Reader’s Poll.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the Opposition was deliberately stalling Parliamentary proceedings. He said they [the Opposition] did not want any discussion on demonetisation issue. The Upper House was adjourned till 2 pm after Treasury and Opposition benches raised slogans and disrupted both the Zero Hour and the Question Hour.
