Four policemen were killed and four others were injured on Thursday when militants ambushed a team of Manipur security personnel in two different parts of the Chandel district. The entire area has been put on high alert.

The first attack took place at Lokchao, around 21 km from the border town of Moreh, when the police team was heading towards Tengnoupal. The second one took place in the Bongyang area of the same district, reported PTI. The militants reportedly attacked the police team with improvised explosives and bullets, according to News18.

In the first attack, one policeman was killed on spot while three others succumbed to their injuries later. A police officer told PTI that the team was on their way to Tengnoupal, where Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was scheduled to attend an inauguration programme. Tengnoupal is a new district carved out from the Naga-dominated district of Chandel. One more security personnel was severely injured in the second attack.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, the police suspect is the handiwork of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) cadres, ANI reported. The state has faced several militant attacks in the recent past. On October 24, two personnel of the Assam Rifles were injured when militants ambushed the chopper of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
