Mumbai’s Elphinstone station to be renamed Prabhadevi
Shiv Sena leaders and residents of the area had demanded the change in name, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road station will soon be renamed Prabhadevi, with the Maharashtra State Assembly having passed a resolution on the change. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Shiv Sena leaders and residents of the Elphinstone locality had demanded the change in name, according to Firstpost. Details of the move have been sent to the Ministry of Railways.
Requests to change the names of other local railway stations in Mumbai – Dadar to Chaityabhumi, Grant Road to August Kranti and Charni Road to Gaondevi – are pending in the Assembly. Last month, the new Oshiwara railway station, located between Jogeshwari and Goregaon, was named Ram Mandir after a temple of the Hindu god near the station.
The move to rename the Elphinstone station comes two weeks after the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja International Airport.
The Elphinstone Road station was named after John Elphinstone, who was the governor of the city – then called Bombay – between 1853 and 1860. Prabhadevi is a 300-year-old temple located in the area.
