Chandrababu Naidu changes stand on demonetisation, says decision was not 'our wish'
The Andhra Pradesh chief minister said that there appeared to be no solution for the problems created by the Centre's move.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who had earlier supported the demonetisation drive, has now said that the step was not taken as per their wish. The president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s ally Telugu Desam Party is the head of the 13-member committee set up by the Centre to look into demonetisation issues.
“Demonetisation was not our wish but it happened. More than 40 days after demonetisation, there are still a lot of problems but yet there appears to be no solution,” he said. Naidu said he had been “breaking his head daily” to find solution to the problems caused by demonetisation, however, he hasn’t been successful at it, reported PTI. He further said the banks are not ready for the transition to digital economy yet.
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes will no longer be a legal tender, the TDP in a Facebook post claimed credit for it and said it was a “victory for Chandrababu over his fight on corruption”. The party had then recalled how Naidu wrote a letter to the prime minister on October 12 reiterating his demand to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. On November 29, he had also said that the “demonetisation problems are temporary but the gains in the long run will be fruitful”.
