The State Human Rights Commission on Tuesday asked the Hyderabad district collector to submit a report on five women who died while giving birth at the Telangana government-run Niloufer Hospital, PTI reported. Non-governmental organisation Helping Hand Foundation and the families of the deceased had alleged that the hospital staff had committed major human rights breaches during the operations and the procedures that followed.

Several complaints, claiming that junior resident doctors performed the surgery without the appropriate supervision and care, were filed with the human rights commission and the inquiry officer. The neglect led to profuse bleeding in all five cases, the complainants alleged.

“The government should take stringent action against the erring doctors and also paycompensation of at least Rs 10 lakh per family as all these families are from economically weaker sections,” the complaints said. A three-member panel comprising senior doctors was set up to investigate the cause of the deaths, which took place between January 29 and February 4.

The district collector has also been ordered to conduct a probe into the deaths.
