Three suspects arrested after Dominican Republic radio journalists are killed during live broadcast
While police said no motive has been ascertained, the victims had earlier denounced the pollution at a protected lake.
The Dominican Republic Police on Wednesday arrested three suspects after gunmen killed two radio journalists during a live broadcast in San Pedro de Macorís the previous day, Dominican Today reported. Police said no motive has been ascertained yet.
Radio station 103.55 HICC presenter Luis Manuel Medina and producer-director Leo Martínez were gunned down during a news bulletin, which was also being broadcast on Facebook Live. The video includes the sound of a woman yelling, “Shots! Shots! Shots!” before the broadcast is disrupted. The deceased had previously denounced the pollution in Laguna Mallen, a protected lake in San Pedro.
Station secretary Dayaba Garcia sustained severe injuries during the attack and had to undergo surgery, The Guardian reported. While the murder is unprecedented, journalists face immense harassment while reporting on organised crime and corruption in the country, BBC reported.
