Kashmir: Suspected militants attack PDP minister’s house in Anantnag, snatch weapons from guards
Two policemen were injured after the armed men resorted to heavy firing at the entrance to Syed Farooq Andrabi’s ancestral home.
A group of suspected militants opened fire at a Peoples Democratic Party minister’s ancestral home in Dooru, Anantnag, on Sunday night. Although Minister of State for Hajj and Auquaf Syed Farooq Andrabi (pictured above) does not stay in the house, his parents do, according to Greater Kashmir.
The men also decamped with weapons after injuring two policemen. “The militants resorted to heavy firing on the guard picket. The firing was retaliated by the policemen deployed there, triggering a brief gunfight in which two policemen sustained injuries,” the police told Greater Kashmir. However, Deputy Inspector General SP Pani said they have yet to ascertain how many weapons had been snatched.
The incident took place late on Sunday. The suspected militants barged into the house, located around 8 km from Srinagar, reported NDTV.
Dooru falls under the Anantnag parliamentary constituency, where by-polls will be held on April 12. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s brother Musti Tassaduq Hussain is contesting on a PDP ticket from the constituency.
This is the second such incident to take place over the weekend. On Saturday, suspected militants had attacked a police constable and fled with his AK-47 in Jammu. The police have arrested two people in connection with that case.
The consecutive attacks come only days before Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state’s Udhampur district. Modi will be in the state on April 2 to inaugurate the Chenani-Nashri road tunnel.
