Several strikes targeted an ammunition depot near Damascus International Airport in Syria on Thursday, Reuters reported. The airport is used by Iran-backed forces to supply weapons to Lebanese Hezbollah fighters that operate in collaboration with the Syrian Army in the region. The strikes triggered a fire near the airport in the Capital.

Syrian rebel and intelligence officials told Reuters that the five strikes to hit the airport region were carried out by Israel. Israeli Intelligence Minister Israel Katz did not directly confirm his country’s hand in the incident, but said it “corresponds completely with Israel’s policy to act to prevent Iran’s smuggling of advanced weapons via Syria to Hezbollah in Iran”.

Besides Russia, Iran supports Hezbollah fighters and other Shi’ite militia in Syria. They fight rebels in the country alongside President Bashar al-Assad’s troops.

Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanon’s al-Manar TV said there were no human casualties in the attack, and only warehouses and fuel tanks had been damaged.
