India’s benchmark indices made significant gains on Wednesday after opening flat. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex closed 321.86 points ahead at 31,770.89, and the National Stock Exchange Nifty soared past the 9,800 mark again, ending the session 103.15 points up at 9,897.30.

On the Sensex, Tata Motors (+3.57%), Cipla (+3.54%), ITC (+3.01%), Hindustan Unilever (+3%) and Sun Pharmaceuticals (+2.69%) were the best performers. Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra (+4.43%), Cipla (+3.76%), Tata Motors (+3.60%), Bank of Baroda (+3.30%) and Tata Power (+3.08%) made gains on the Nifty.

Asian Paints, NTPC, the Power Grid Corporation of India and Lupin Pharmaceuticals were the poor performers on both the stock exchanges.

Banking stocks, including ICICI, the State Bank of India, HDFC and Axis Bank, traded well on both indices. Among the BSE sectoral indices, the Fast Moving Consumer Goods index gained the most. It was followed by auto and metal.

The rupee, which opened at 64.28 per US dollar, was at 64.2428. It had closed at 64.12 on Monday.
