Maharashtra Congress leader Narayan Rane on Thursday resigned from the party, ANI reported. His resignation comes a day after Rane had claimed that the Congress went back on its promise of making him the chief minister of the state, according to PTI.

“I went to the Congress because I was assured that I will be made chief minister in six months,” Rane, who had joined the party in 2005 after being expelled from the Shiv Sena, said. The politician claimed that the Shiv Sena had asked him to return to the party. “For me there are vacancies everywhere, even in the Shiv Sena. But I won’t go there,” he added.

Rane also criticised the Congress for being unfair to him and his supporters. He said his supporters would contest the upcoming panchayat polls in the state under a new entity – the Samarth Vikas Panel.

There is speculation that he may join the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the legislator said he would announce his plans later.
