US flies bombers over Korean Peninsula, South Korea and Japan join military drill
This comes a day after a South Korean lawmaker alleged that suspected North Korean hackers had stolen sensitive military documents in September 2016.
The United States on Tuesday flew two strategic bombers over the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said on Wednesday that two F-15K fighters from the South Korean military accompanied the two US Air Force B-1B bombers from their base in Guam. The aircraft carried out air-to-ground missile drills, Reuters reported.
The US military said Japanese fighters had also joined the exercise, making it their first night-time drill with forces from both Japan and South Korea. The drill was carried out as US President Donald Trump met top military officials to discuss their strategy with regard to North Korea.
This comes as South Korean lawmaker Rhee Cheol-hee alleged that suspected North Korean hackers had stolen hundreds of classified military documents from South Korea in September 2016 and gained access to 235 gigabytes of sensitive data. This, he said, includes wartime operational plans involving the US as well as procedures for “decapitation” attacks on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
