At least four people have died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in the Rohtas district of Bihar, PTI reported on Saturday. The deaths were reported from Danwar village late on Friday night.

The incident has led to the suspension of 12 policemen, ANI reported. Two liquor smugglers have also been arrested.

Rohtas Superintendent of Police Manavjit Singh Dhillon said six others who had fallen sick were being treated at various private hospitals. He said angry villagers staged a demonstration at Danwar and demanded action against those facilitating illegal liquor trade in the area. “The matter is being investigated,” Dhillon added. “Only after the postmortem reports are out, can we say with certainty that the deaths have been caused by consumption of illicit liquor.”

The Nitish Kumar government had banned sale and consumption of liquor in Bihar on April 1, 2016.
