Maharashtra: 1 dead as building collapses in Thane’s Bhiwandi area, 7 trapped under debris rescued
Operations are on to rescue two more people stuck under the debris.
At least one person died and nine were trapped after a three-story residential building collapsed in Bhiwandi city in Thane district of Maharashtra on Friday, the Hindustan Times reported.
A team of the Mumbai Fire Brigade was sent to the site on the request of the fire chief of Bhiwandi, its head Prabhat Rahangdale said in a statement. Seven injured persons were taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi for treatment. Operations are on to rescue two more people stuck under the debris.
“The incident happened at 9 am, and we rushed help to the spot immediately,” Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation Public Relations Officer Sunil Zhalke told the newspaper. The Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster control department has sent rescue teams, and the fire brigade has also deployed a team.
The building, Tahir Bijnori, was located at KG Nagar, Navi Basti, in the interiors of Bhiwandi and was not easily accessible. Zhalke said the structure was just seven years old and that municipal officials were examining whether it was on the list of dangerous buildings.
In 2016, four buildings had collapsed in Bhiwandi during the monsoon, the Hindustan Times said.
