Domestic carrier IndiGo cancelled 42 flights on Wednesday, continuing to operate with a curtailed schedule two days after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation grounded eight of its A320 Neo planes. The flights cancelled were to Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Srinagar, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Delhi, Dehradun, Amritsar, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, among others.

GoAir, whose three planes were grounded on Monday because it is fitted with a particular series of engines manufactured by aerospace company Pratt & Whitney, also cancelled six flights on Wednesday, PTI reported.

The cancellations have a ripple effect on flight fares. The fares for Mumbai-Delhi flights have increased three-fold, reported DNA. “With current load factors at over 90%, this reduction in capacity is likely to have a 5-10% impact on fares on key routes in the short to medium term,” said Sharat Dhall, the chief operating officer at travel portal Yatra.com.

On Tuesday, IndiGo and GoAir had together cancelled 65 flights. IndiGo operates up to 1,000 flights a day while GoAir has around 230 flights daily.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Monday decided to ground 11 aircraft hours after an A320 Neo aircraft of IndiGo suffered an engine failure mid-air and was forced to make an emergency landing at the Ahmedabad airport.

The DGCA grounded the Airbus neos fitted with “PW1100 engines” with engine serial numbers 450 and asked both IndiGo and GoAir to not refit these engines with spare parts in their inventory. The regulator said it will make further decisions on the matter after consulting with the European Aviation Safety Agency and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.
