Delhi Police stop JNU students, teachers marching to Parliament to protest varsity’s policies
Many protestors were injured when the police baton charged them and used water cannons.
Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University along with members of the varsity’s teachers’ union marched to Parliament on Friday, to protest against the administration’s compulsory attendance rule and the removal of several departmental heads, ANI reported.
However, the Delhi Police halted the march near INA Market before using water cannons against the demonstrators. They also baton charged the protestors, injuring many, the students said. The police detained some demonstrators as well.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Union had announced the march on Wednesday after claiming the the university’s administration had not reached out to the faculty members who have been on the hunger strike, to protest the new rules and sackings.
The teachers’ association demanded that the management withdraw its notification removing the department heads and other circulars issued without consulting relevant university authorities.
The association also criticised the administration for its “selective inaction” against a professor accused of sexual harassment.
