The Election Commission on Tuesday set up a special panel of officers to investigate a possible leak of the Karnataka Assembly election schedule. The committee has a week to submit its report, according to The Times of India.

The panel will seek information from media houses and individuals who shared the election and result dates before an official announcement from the Election Commission.

The Election Commission’s actions come after the chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s information technology cell, Amit Malviya, tweeted the dates of the Karnataka elections before they were officially announced. He later deleted the tweet, and claimed he had only shared what a news channel had been reporting.

A section of the media had also flashed the dates before the Election Commission had announced them.

The Karnataka Assembly elections will be held on May 12 and the results will be announced on May 15.
