A student of Kanpur’s Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University in Uttar Pradesh was found dead, after the police and varsity authorities allegedly did not act on her sexual harassment complaint, The Indian Express reported on Wednesday. The police said she was found after she had hanged herself, and no suicide note was found.

The Kanpur Police has registered a case against two university students, Aniket Dixit and Aniket Pandey, whom the 19-year-old woman had accused of verbally harassing her. The Kanpur Police also booked the woman’s department head whom she had approached with her complaint on January 31. The Kalyanpur police station house officer was removed for not initiating action on her complaint, while the investigating officer has been suspended.

The varsity authorities told The Indian Express that in March, the disciplinary committee had warned the two students accused of harassing her. The woman’s father said she had filed a complaint with her department head but she was forced to take it back. He also alleged that the investigating officer had forced them to sign a blank paper to take their police complaint back.

However, Senior Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar claimed the woman had submitted in writing that she does not want any action against the men.
