The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram on Tuesday served notices ordering over 1,500 illegal meat shops in Haryana’s capital city to shut down, PTI reported. The illegal meat shops in several areas, including Narsinghpur, Mohammedpur Jhandsa, Khandsa, Sector 46 and Sector 39 areas, were asked to shut down within two days.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram said strict action will be taken if the order is not followed. “The licences of 129 authorised shops had lapsed on March 31 and apart from their renewals, no fresh licences were issued,” said the corporation’s medical officer Dr Ashish Singla. “We have served notices to illegal shop owners who did not have licences to run commercial outlets for the slaughtering and selling of meat of chicken, goat and fish in Gurugram.”

The matter of illegal meat shops was discussed in a grievance committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on March 31, The Times of India reported. Khattar also said that the number of licenses provided should not be increased.

“We do not want more roadside meat stores, most of which operate in an unhygienic condition and may also pose health hazards to citizens,” The Times of India quoted an unidentified corporation official as saying.
