Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath on Monday summoned the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Bangermau in Unnao who is accused of raping a teenager, News18 reported. The woman and her family had tried to commit suicide outside Adityanath’s house on Sunday. Earlier on Monday, her father died in a hospital while in judicial custody.

Adityanath called the father’s death an “unfortunate incident” and said he had asked the police to investigate the matter thoroughly. “Those at fault, whoever they might be, will not be spared,” he told ANI.

Meanwhile, Bangermau MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar said he was open to any investigation. “There is no allegation against me, I am open to any kind of investigation,” he said. “Strict action should be taken against the real culprit.”

Director General of Police OP Singh said he had formed a team to investigate the case. “The accused mentioned in the FIR will be arrested,” he said. “Jail authority has been told under what circumstances the man [victim’s father] died.”

The girl’s sister demanded that an FIR be registered against the legislator and his brother. “My father has already died and now they say that the action will be taken,” she told ANI. “I want justice.”

On Sunday, the girl and her family attempted suicide outside Adityanath’s house in Lucknow, alleging that the police had not taken action against Sengar and his accomplices for allegedly raping her in 2017 and beating them up. The teenager had poured oil and tried to set herself on fire before the police stopped her.

Her father died in a hospital in Unnao on Monday, days after the MLA’s brother and his accomplices beat him up, The Times of India reported. He had been taken into custody last week in the wake of a clash between his family and Sengar’s supporters.

The Uttar Pradesh Police said on Monday a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into his death. Unnao Superintendent of Police Pushpanjali Devi said two police officers and four constables have been suspended, and four people accused of beating up the father have been arrested, according to ANI.
