Kathua rape and murder: Victim’s lawyer refutes allegations that she received money for the case
Jammu and Kashmir-based lawyer Deepika Singh Rajawat said her legal team had taken the case on a pro-bono basis.
Deepika Singh Rajawat, the advocate representing the family of the Kathua rape and murder victim, on Wednesday alleged that her dormant Twitter account had been hacked. She refuted allegations that she had received money in the girl’s name. Rajawat said her statement was in response to a claim made by journalist Sudhir Chaudhary during a news broadcast on Zee TV.
The Jammu and Kashmir-based lawyer said that her legal team – including advocate-on-record Sunil Fernandes, senior counsel Indira Jaising, the Lawyers Collective in Delhi – had taken the case on a pro-bono (unpaid) basis. In her statement, Rajawat also refuted Chaudhary’s claim that she had spent the last few days at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. Chaudhary was trying to malign her reputation, Rajawat alleged.
The rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district in January sparked protests and criticism against the state and Union governments. Earlier on Wednesday, 15 civilians were injured in clashes in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town during a protest demanding justice for the girl. Clashes were also reported in Tral, where students of Government Degree College protested outside the campus where police reportedly used force to quell the demonstration.
Rajawat said she would lodge a complaint with Twitter about the alleged hacking. “I am also lodging a complaint with Twitter to deactivate/suspend @DeepikaSRajawat and other lookalike accounts, passing themselves off as my accounts,” the lawyer’s statement said. “The photograph of the Kathua victim has been put on the banner with the malafide intent of lodging a criminal complaint against me. It has further come to my knowledge that such a complaint has been lodged by Vibhor Anand, who claims to be an advocate, at a Delhi Police Station.”
