SC stays proceedings against Salman Khan for alleged derogatory remarks about Valmiki community
The community filed complaints against the actor after he allegedly used the word ‘bhangi’ to describe his dancing skills while promoting a film in 2017.
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed criminal proceedings against actor Salman Khan in cases filed against him in Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Mumbai after he allegedly made derogatory comments about the Valmiki community while promoting a film in 2017, PTI reported.
Khan allegedly used the word “bhangi”, a derogatory reference to the community, to describe his dancing skills ahead of the release of the film Tiger Zinda Hai on December 22. Soon after, members of the community filed cases and protested across India, burnt movie posters and vandalised theatres.
On Monday, senior advocate NK Kaul, who represented Khan, requested the court to stay the proceedings. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra allowed the submission, but asked Kaul to provide details of cases pending against the actor.
The court will hear the case again on July 23, ANI reported.
