The Supreme Court on Friday ended the practice of lawyers mentioning urgent matters before the chief justice of India, BarandBench reported. They will now have to ask the Registrar Judicial for an early listing of cases, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said.

Misra made the announcement before the court’s proceedings began on Friday. The advocates-on-record can, however, ask the chief justice of India to intervene if they are not satisfied with the registrar’s decision, he said.

The development comes after the top court agreed to examine a plea seeking regulation of the chief justice’s powers as the “master of the roster”.

On September 20, the Supreme Court had said only advocates-on-record had the privilege of mentioning cases for out-of-turn listing and urgent hearing. Advocates-on-record are the lawyers who are allowed to file cases and pleadings before the Supreme Court.

On January 4, the apex court amended its order to include junior lawyers.
