Seven people died on the Amritsar-Jalandhar national highway on Monday morning when their car rammed a parked truck, The Tribune reported. A three-year-old child survived and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Four of those who died were a family from Delhi and the others were from Haryana. They were reportedly returning from a visit to a temple.

The incident took place at 5.30 am outside an eatery on the highway at Khalchian village in Amritsar district. The owner of the eatery claimed that the truck driver had just parked the truck on the roadside when the speeding car hit it from behind. The car was badly damaged.

“We have informed the families,” said Avtar Singh, the station house officer of Khalchian police station. “The bodies have been sent for postmortem [examination]. We are investigating the cause of the accident.”
