Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a Rs 100-crore package for relief and rehabilitation in flood-affected areas of Barak Valley, The Assam Tribune reported on Sunday.

Floods in the state have killed at least 20 people and affected nearly 5.64 lakh people across five districts.

“The money should be utilised for adequate compensation to flood-affected people,” Sonowal said after a high-level review meeting at the office of the Cachar deputy commissioner in Silchar. “Also schools and other establishments, which have been damaged by flood, should be repaired.”

Over the weekend, Sonowal visited the three districts of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar in Barak Valley that were the worst-affected by the floods. He asked the deputy commissioners of the three districts to submit detailed reports on the extent of damage caused by the flood.

During the review meeting, Sonowal also asked the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department to rescue marooned animals and provide fodder and medical treatment to the strays, North East Now reported. He has asked the district administration and the agriculture department to assess the damage to crops and submit a report to the government.

Accompanied by Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, Sonowal visited the embankment at the Sib Bari Road in Tarapur and said the water resources department has been given instructions to repair the embankments and the sluice gates in the valley.
