Uttar Pradesh: ‘Why is there no quota for Dalits at Aligarh Muslim University,’ asks Adityanath
The chief minister said that those who claim that Dalits are being humiliated should demand reservations in minority-run institutions too.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath on Sunday asked why minority-run institutions, including the Aligarh Muslim University, do not have reserved seats for Dalits, PTI reported. “If the Banaras Hindu University can give it [reservation] to Dalits, why can the Aligarh Muslim University not do the same?” he asked.
The chief minister was speaking at a public event in Kannauj district. Adityanath took a jibe at the Congress without naming the party. “One question should be raised to all those who are saying that Dalits are being humiliated … when would they ask for reservation for our Dalit brothers in the Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia?”
Adityanath also claimed that Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited temples during elections to “prove he is a Hindu”.
Aligarh Muslim University spokesperson Shafey Kidwai said the varsity’s current rules do not have provisions for reservation on the basis of caste, NDTV reported. “Admissions were given on the basis of internal and external candidates,” Kidwai said. “Internal is the one who has passed Class 12 from here. And the rest, 50%, is for external candidates... Now the case is in Supreme Court.”
