The Mumbai Police on Wednesday tweeted that there was a crack in the bridge at Grant Road station. The bridge has been shut and traffic has been diverted to Nana Chowk area towards Kennedy bridge.

Work is on to repair the structure. An engineer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying that the crack was due to “expansion”. Assistant commissioner of D ward Vishwas Mote told the daily that it was a surface crack and was not “a big deal”. “The traffic police and the bridges department will decide when to reopen the bridge for traffic,” Mote said.

The incident has led to slow-moving traffic in and around Kennedy Bridge.

This comes a day after part of the overhead bridge connecting Andheri East to Andheri West collapsed, injuring five people. Two of the injured are in intensive care at Cooper Hospital while the others suffered fractures.

The Gokhale bridge collapse affected local train traffic on the western line as overhead wires were damaged. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said he had ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The Railways said it will conduct a safety audit of around 450 road overbridges, foot overbridges and bridges across the city.
