Heavy rains hit parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Karnataka on Saturday. The India Meteorological Department issued a warning predicting heavy to very heavy rain in a few places and extremely heavy rain in isolated places over the Konkan region and Goa till Wednesday.

The weather department has also forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in south interior Karnataka, heavy to very heavy rainfall over southern Gujarat, the central Maharashtra and Marathawada region, Kerala and Telangana.

According to the IMD, “heavy rain” is 64.5 mm to 124.4 mm on a single day while “very heavy rain” means 124.5 mm to 244.4 mm. “Extremely heavy rain” refers to 244.5 mm or more recorded in a single day.

Maharashtra

One person was killed and over 100 rescued on Saturday after nearly 40 people were stranded at Chinchoti waterfall in Palghar district’s Vasai, following heavy rains. A rescue operation was under way for 12 others who are currently stranded. An official said a team of the 5 Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force, stationed at Andheri in Mumbai, was provided a “green corridor” by the traffic police to get to the site of operations near Vasai quickly.

In Mumbai, train services between Badlapur and Kalyan railway stations were suspended for a few hours on Saturday due to water logging on the tracks between Vitthalwadi and Kalyan stops, The Indian Express reported.

A road caved-in on a stretch between NK Road and Dr Baba Saheb Jaykar Marg in South Mumbai’s Charni Road, according to DNA. The civic administration has started repair work on the road.

Traffic on the Mumbai-Goa Highway was halted for over 30 minutes near Kashedi Ghat as the Savitri river overflowed. “River water has come on the highway, and traffic is stopped due to it,” an unidentified state highway police officer told DNA.

Navi Mumbai and Kalyan too received heavy rainfall, leading to water logging on the roads.

Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur and Thane received heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. The rains caused water-logging on the premises of Nagpur Vidhan Sabha on Friday.

Goa and Karnataka

Goa continued to receive heavy rains for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday, reported NDTV. Continuous downpour led to flooding and traffic congestion in Panaji, Mapusa, Vasco and Margao. This is the highest rainfall – 282 mm in six hours – that Goa has received since 1994.

Heavy rainfall hit several parts of Karnataka, with the coastal city of Mangaluru being the worst affected. Water-logging was reported on several stretches of the city’s roads on Saturday, according to ANI.

Assam

Over 41,000 people across 58 villages in Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts have been affected by flood following heavy rain, according to a report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Over 2,156 hectares of crop lands have been damaged.

Sarat Chandra Kalita, an official of the Central Water Commission, said the level of Brahmaputra river touched 49.02 cm on Saturday, reported ANI. The danger level is 66 cm.

Lakhimpur district is the worst-hit with over 22,000 people affected. In Biswanath, Chirang and Morigaon districts, erosion has displaced families.
