Rajasthan Police on Tuesday arrested three people for tying a woman to a tree in Jhunjhunu and assaulting her, The Indian Express reported. A purported video of the crime surfaced on social media on Monday.

The police said the incident occurred on July 6 in Bilwa village. “The woman in the video has been identified as 32-year-old Suman Devi who lives in the village along with her husband and children,” said Nawal Garh Police Station House Officer Surendra Singh Degra. “For some time, the family had a property dispute with Maniram, the brother of Devi’s husband.”

Degra said Devi and her husband claimed that her brother-in-law Maniram and his family assaulted her. “The place where Maniram was driving the tractor is near a disputed road to which both families stake claim,” Degra said. “On seeing her brother-in-law near the area, Devi tried to stop him. This infuriated Maniram and his family.”

The police said following this Maniram along with his family started assaulting Devi and later tied her to a tree. “The son of Devi tried to stop the accused but they didn’t listen and continued to assault her,” said Degra. “A case was registered by Devi and her husband against Maniram and his family. Preliminary investigation suggests that somebody had filmed a video of Devi being assaulted that went viral on social media on Monday.”

Maniram and his family fled their home after the case was registered, Superintendent of Police (Jhunjhunu) Manish Agarwal told the Hindustan Times. “On Monday evening, we tracked them down and arrested three of them,” Agarwal said. “We are carrying out further investigation.”
