Nine people, including eight children, were killed in landslides in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Wednesday morning, News18 reported. Seven bodies have been recovered.

“I am deeply saddened to know that nine precious life [lives] lost due to landslide at three places in Tamenglong headquarters, till now seven bodies have been recovered, two bodies of children yet to be recovered,” Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a tweet. “Rescue operations are on.”

In one incident, a couple’s five children were killed, while two siblings were swept away by muddy waters when the family was deep asleep, The New Indian Express reported. In the third incident, a mother and son were swept away.

Heavy rainfall in the last few days has damaged several roads and a bridge in the state. A bridge over the Barak River that was damaged on Sunday, cutting the state off from the rest of the country, has been repaired, the Imphal Free Press reported. Commuters and heavy vehicles began using the bridge on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, heavy rain washed away a suspension bridge at Pithoragarh’s Nachani, ANI reported. The Chamba-Rishikesh section of the National Highway 94 was blocked after landslides near Fakot and Bhinnu. Clearing operations are under way, ANI reported.

All government schools and anganwadi centres in Dehradun will be closed on Wednesday following alerts for thunderstorm and heavy rain. Later in the day, the Nainital district magistrate asked all schools to remains shut on Thursday too, reported ANI.

The water level in Bageshwar town has risen and the city is facing a flood-like situation, according to ANI. The Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway was closed on Tuesday because of to landslides in Tehri Garhwal district.
