Suspected militants shot dead a Central Reserve Police Force jawan in Naira village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday evening.

A police spokesperson said the militants barged into Naseer Ahmad Rather’s house at Naira village. “They shot at him, injuring him critically,” the officer told The Hindu. “He was immediately evacuated to the Pulwama district hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said. Rather, who was posted with the CRPF’s 182 Battalion, was home on leave when the attack took place.

Medical Superintendent of Pulwama district hospital Dr Abdul Rashid Parra said Rather was declared dead on arrival, according to Rising Kashmir. “He had multiple firearm injuries on his abdomen,” an unidentified doctor at the hospital said.

The attack on the CRPF jawan came just days after suspected militants released Special Police Officer Mudasir Ahmad Lone after his mother appealed to them to “forgive” and let go of her son. Lone was abducted on Friday from his home in Pulwama district while he was on leave.
