Supreme Court refuses to use Justice Srikrishna’s data protection report for Aadhaar verdict
The panel has suggested measures to protect personal information of citizens, the role and duties of data processors and the rights of individuals.
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to use the report by Justice BN Srikrishna on data protection in the case related to the validity of the Aadhaar scheme, PTI reported. A five-judge Constitution bench had reserved its verdict on May 10 after concluding the hearings on a clutch of petitions challenging the scheme.
The Centre, represented by Attorney General KK Venugopal, told the court that a committee led by Srikrishna had recently submitted a draft law on data protection and its report, and if the court wants, the government can submit it for the perusal of the bench.
“I do not think that it is required,” Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said.
On Friday, the Justice Srikrishna committee submitted its report to the Centre on suggestions for a data protection law. The committee suggested measures to protect personal information of citizens, the role and duties of data processors and the rights of individuals.
