CBI moves SC to arrest Virbhadra Singh in graft case
The HP High Court had granted relief to the incumbent chief minister and restrained the CBI from interrogating or arresting him without prior permission.
The Central Bureau of Investigation moved the Supreme Court on Thursday, challenging the Himachal Pradesh High Court’s order restraining the arrest and interrogation of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in a disproportionate assets case. The agency requested for a hearing on Friday, but the court said there was no urgency in the matter and fixed it for October 26. The CBI also filed a petition seeking the transfer of the case to New Delhi.
On September 30, Singh had filed a petition in the High Court pleading that the CBI was motivated by “malafide intentions and political vendetta” in its case against him. A day later, a High Court order had provided protection to Singh and his wife from arrest and interrogation. The incumbent chief minister is accused of amassing disproportionate wealth when he was union minister for mining in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.
