Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Wednesday that his government will ensure that the final National Register of Citizens list does not contain the names of any foreigners.

“We will keep an eye so that name of any foreigner is not included in the National Register of Citizens,” Sonowal said after hoisting the national flag at an Independence Day ceremony at Veterinary College in Guwahati, according to PTI. “The government is also committed to ensure that no Indian citizen living in Assam is left out of the list.”

Sonowal praised the 70,000 policemen who were deployed in the state to ensure peaceful publication of the final draft on July 31. He also lauded the “hard work” of 55,000 government employees who prepared the draft.

The July 31 draft left out nearly 41 lakh people, including some MLAs and a former chief minister. The state coordinator of the register, Prateek Hajela, said earlier this month that people left out from the list would get an opportunity to submit fresh sets of documents during the upcoming claims-and-objections process.

The Supreme Court has asked the central government to provide by mid-August the standard operating procedure for the process. It is scheduled to run from August 30 to September 28.
