A sedition case was filed against a cleric and two other people in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj on Wednesday for allegedly not allowing students to sing the national anthem.

The incident took place at Madrasa Arabia Ahle Girls’ College, where students and teachers had gathered on Wednesday to celebrate Independence Day, the Hindustan Times reported. However, cleric Juned Ansari, who is not associated with the madrasa, allegedly stopped the children from singing the national anthem.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

“Juned allegedly opposed the singing of national anthem in madrasa saying it was not permissible in Islam,” Additional Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Tripathi said. He added that a sedition case has been registered against Ansari and two others.

However, The Indian Express reported that the case was filed against Principal Fazal-ur-Rahman and two others.

The police took action after Sunil Tripathi, a science teacher, handed over a video clip of the alleged incident. “Fazal-ur-Rahman and one other staff member stood silent,” Ashutosh Tripathi said. “They neither supported Juned nor opposed him. Juned was in favour of singing ‘Saare jahan se achcha’ instead of the national anthem but Sunil Tripathi opposed him.”

Ansari was arrested on Wednesday, and the police are attempting to track down the two other accused.
